Smile Facebook Announces New Legacy Contact Feature for Handling Desceased Persons' Accounts

Facebook announced a new feature on the social network Thursday morning known as Legacy Contact. The feature allows you to set up what will happen to the handling of your Facebook account if you were to pass away. With it, you can pass on responsibility of the Facebook account to a trustworthy family member so that they can memorialize your account for supporting friends and family to leave their respects.

    • Write a post to display at the top of the memorialized Timeline (for example, to announce a memorial service or share a special message)
    • Respond to new friend requests from family members and friends who were not yet connected on Facebook
    • Update the profile picture and cover photo

When an account has been deemed as owned by a deceased person, Facebook will display a new "Remembering" tag above the users' name, as shown in the example profile image above.

To set up who will get the keys to your account after you pass away, you can follow Facebook's Legacy Contact form by going to the application's Settings menu and choosing "Security" from the list of options. From here, you will be able to start filling out your options:

Facebook notes that in order for someone to be deemed "deceased," it is up to the friends and family of that person to report it to Facebook using this form.

Facebook is rolling out this feature in the United States first, and will follow in other countries if everything goes well.
